Learn how to build a well by clicking the photographs taken at various stages
during the construction of a well at Buloo Kofi near Mangoase, Eastern Region, Ghana we built in May 2006.
1st Stage
In consultation with the village elders, the chief and residents we decide the most suitable location for the well. Using a stick and a rope mark a 5ft wide circle in the dirt. Invite a village celebrity (In this case the chief) to dig the first spade full.

2nd Stage
Using a pick and shovel dig a 30/40 ft hole until the
water table is reached. This normally takes 2/3 weeks
of split shift 7am-5pm digging. Once the water table is
reached dig another 3/4 ft to ensure the well never runs
dry during the dry season. In some cases rock is reached
before water so jack hammers and a generator are needed
to dig deeper.
3rd Stage
Using local sand and stone mold concrete casing to line the well to ensure the sides of the well will not erode. Once set hard, lower the moldings into the hole.
4th Stage
Cap the well with concrete. Insert a drainpipe so the
bottom of the pipe reaches the water table. Install a
simple but hardwearing hand pump. Select five members
of the village to be trained on how to maintain and repair
the seals on the pump and the well is complete.
